I am finding some disturbing recent trends in Internet marketing. The main area that bothers me is the latest habits relating to email marketing.

I seem to receive the same emails many times in the same week from the same marketer. What frequently occurs is that I sign for a free offer, and find I already got it from that same marketer.

The frequency of gifts seems to be overdone. How many emails do I see titled “Your download is ready”. I am all in favour of attracting subscribers with gifts, and then following up with more gifts. However, when every 2nd email from the sender is a gift, don’t you think this devalues the whole concept of “free”. You end up with more ebooks gathering digital dust.

Spelling mistakes in emails. Some mailers are so lazy and mail so often that they never spell-check their emails. You receive a poorly worded promotion to sell you a product, yet it’s often just one paragraph with 2 or 3 spelling goofs in it. The message is to go see this or that, without even telling you what it is.

Other irritating email subject lines

“I just want to make sure you got yesterday’s email”
“Did you get your download?”
“Have you downloaded today’s free gift yet?” Of course this was the 2nd email in the same day. And it happens so very often.

This exaggeration of emailing 10 times more frequently than just one year ago, has really hurt the “email open rate”. Where I used to have 50% to 80% of my subscribers open the emails I sent, it is now down to an average of only 10%. One way to look at this dilemma, is to assume you need lists 5 times larger than a couple of years ago. How sad as it is now harder than ever to capture new subscribers names.

Product launch deceptions: “Sorry you couldn’t get my product, but the server went up in smoke from all the action.”
Do you believe it? I sure am skeptical seeing it seems to happen only to products selling for $500 and up.

Enough now, I don’t want you to think I am a complainer. All I want is to see a comeback in the integrity of my fellow Internet Marketers. Or has that become too much to ask. I long to see more emails with useful content, instead of multiple promos.

Do let me know what you think and how you feel about it.
